Urinary Excretion of 17-Ketosteroids in Women with Uterine Cancer before and after Surgery

Abstract
Examination of urinary 17-ketosteroids in normal women and in thirty patients with uterine cancer,
both before and after surgery was perfomed using the Holtroff & Koch method.
1) The urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids in 50 normal women, ranging 18 to 50 years old, was6.5-13.5mg./day.
2) Among the thirty patients with uterine cancer aged 38 to 60, the urinary excretion before surgery was lower than normal in 12. cases, within normal limits in 10 cases" and¢¥, higher than normal 18 in cases.
3) In regard to the urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids before, and after; surgery, 25 cases revealed, higher than normal levels during the first 24 hours after surgery after which the valQes gradually declined to normal. But in 5 cases the amount was decreased in the first 24 hours after surgery increasing after only 48 hours.
4) These results indicate that there is no difference in the amount of urinary 17-ketosteroids excretion between normal women and women with uterine cancer. The temporary increase of urinary 17-ketosteroids excretion after surgery can be attributed to the adrenocortical hiyperfunction resulting from the surgical stimuli and individual variations in cortical reactions.
